Timing is everything!
We all hate waiting in lines. Whether we're at the store or on hold with our phone company, being 15th in line is the WORST. So I want to help you plan your session NOW that way you're always FIRST!
I'm going to help you figure out which months are best, which days are easiest, down all the way to the time of day - let's go!
Which Months are Packed - and Which Aren't!
Certain months fill up much faster than others. These are peak months, and if you want your photos taken in any of these months, I suggest you message me as soon as possible! We can set a tentative day and time, and if we need to adjust, we can if possible. But at least you'll be in the books and your day won't be taken by someone else! Most likely, if you message me within these months, we'll have to go with a day or time that may not be ideal. Pre-booking is best for these busy times!
Peak Months
- April
- May
- July
- October
- November
- December
Another option is to have your session in non-peak months. Availability is much more open so there's plenty of options and wiggle room for your photos. If you're trying to photograph for a holiday or event (Christmas, birthdays, etc.), but don't want to book in a peak month, we can always decorate to make it look like it's the time of year you want the photos for! With some decor and the proper setting, your Christmas cards can look pristine even if the photos are taken in August!
Non-Peak Months
- January
- February
- March
- June
- August
- September
Days of the Week
As a rule, weekends are packed! Most often, I'm asked for a session on Saturday or Sunday. Of course though! Most of us are off on the weekends, or if we're trying to get together with family, weekends tend to be the easiest option for everyone and their busy lives.
But that holds true for EVERYONE. Which means that the beach or park you want your photos taken at will most likely be filled with families enjoying their free time too. So if you're able to, I suggest scheduling your session on a weekday - even a weekday evening. Most areas will be much less hectic, making your session more enjoyable!
While accidental photo-bombing can be comical, having a huge crowd in the background of your beautiful family portraits can be quite distracting.
Best days for a session:
- Monday
- Tuesday
- Wednesday
- Thursday
Time of Day
One of my biggest misconceptions when I started my photography journey was thinking that high-noon was the best time for photos. I thought the sun at its highest point offers the most light so it would be ideal for photo taking.
I WAS VERY WRONG!
The sun at its highest offers the HARSHEST lighting. It can be unflattering, very contrasted, and often leads to squinting eyes because it's too bight to open your eyes fully.
When scheduling your session, I suggest picking a time within 1-2 hours of sunrise or sunset (don't worry, I'll know the times and will let you know!). Sunrise and Sunset lighting is so soft, very warm, and creates a beautiful, romantic feel in your photos.
Of course, if your schedule only allows for noon sessions, that's ok! We'll find shaded spots to diffuse the lighting. Woodsy areas or buildings are ideal for noon-time sessions.
